My Second Rez Day
My dear Friends
Two years ago today I decided to sign up for Second Life. I had heard so much about it in the preceding weeks and months. I had only a very vague idea what SL was all about. I really did not expect much, I am just a curious person by nature so I had to check it out. I would never have thought I would still be on Second Life two years later nor would I have thought it possible SL would change my life in any significant way. In fact, I wanted to keep Second Life and real life separate for good.
I have been so lucky to meet so many nice people here. Some of them have become really good friends. I was even blessed enough to meet the love of my life, my darling Amber! It was a good thing I was bored that day two years ago. Signing up for SL was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It’s not so much because of the bits and bytes that make this world; it’s because of you, my dear friends!
To me, Second Life is an adventurous journey; we never know what lies around the corner. I am so grateful to have good friends who are willing to accompany me on this voyage to an unknown destination.
Thank you for everything you have done for me!
Your Abigail

Decay of Politeness and Civility in Caledon
When I first came to Caledon I was impressed by Caledon's culture, its civility and politeness. I must admit, at first it felt strange being addressed as "Miss Raymaker" (today, if I ever am adressed like that, it feels even more strange but that is a different story, I will come back to that later). I loved Caledon because it was a place where you could have intelligent discussions with your friends and neighbours. Wherever I went in Caledon, I was always treated with the greatest respect. In some ways Caledon was a dream come to true for me because I always loved 19th century fashion and etiquette.
In recent months, Caledon seems to have leapt from the 19th into the 21st century in terms of manners and etiquette. It all started with the loss of using proper forms of address. First, it was just a slight disregard for titels and/or marial status. When my wife, Lady, Amber, and I got married, most people seem to recognise my new title "Dame Abigail" or "Dame Bauerhoff" and/or my marital status ("Mrs Raymaker-Palowakski"). I am aware that Caledon has grown to a point where it is impossible to know everyone's titles and marital status. However, as time progressed, many people seem to have either forgotten that I no longer am "Miss Raymaker" or they seem to completely disregard my marital status or my title. I am not going to explain the nature of the relationship between Lady Amber and myself, suffice it to say that is so much more than just role play. I have never taken offence and I never will if anyone addresses me as "Miss Raymaker" especially if I did not have the pleasure to make their acquaintance yet. I do, however, appreciate everyone's efforts to use proper titels and forms of address. Speaking about Lady Amber, when I first met her, I hardly ever saw anyone not addressing her as "Lady Amber" or "Lady Bauerhoff". These days, she is often addressed as "Miss Palowakski". At this point I must admit I do not always use the proper titles myself. But when addressing dear friends it often just comes natural to use first names. But I guess that would not be a problem as long as we do not forget about proper titles at all.
Disregard for titles or marital status is one issue. It would not be even worth mentioning if Caledon was not supposed to be a 19th century-themed nation state. What saddens me even more is the way certain conversations are conducted in ISC chat these days. Using first names instead of proper forms of address is only a minor issue, it seems to be a trend that the conversations in ISC are more akin to the kind of discussions you would expect in any mainland group chat, not to mention people verbally attacking each other as if we were a community made up of many immature teenage boys and girls. What has happend to the Caledon I once knew?
Talking about a problem, like many citizens have done before me, is an important first step. However, it is not enough. As a simple and humble citizen, my resources and my influence are very limited, I will try to do my best to help improve the situation.

Early Bird New Year's Dance
Amber and I hosted the Early Bird New Year's Dance at Amber's Ballroom Pavilion on New Year's Day. Lady Soliel provided a fine selection of Disco and Rock and Roll tunes. It was a well-attended fun event. Many of our friends as well new faces turned out in spite of the holiday. I hope we can make the New Year's Dance a tradition.
